ANTIOXIDANT POWER FROM ALGAE

By Dan Fryda

Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful antioxidants available today. It’s a member of the carotenoid family which includes beta-carotene and lycopene and is produced by marine microalgae. The algae produces astaxanthin when deprived of nutrients and/or is subjected to intense sunlight to protect itself from environmental stress. Thankfully this benefit can be used by us as well. When applied topically, astaxanthin’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power helps your skin restore its youthful appearance by reducing redness, calming irritation and supporting your skin’s ability to defend itself from the sun’s ultra violet rays.

A 2001 Japanese study conducted by Seki et al demonstrated the anti-wrinkle properties of astaxanthin where female subjects experienced a noticeable reduction of wrinkles using a cream with astaxanthin.  A dermatological assessment showed a reduction of puffiness around the eyes as well as a significant increase in skin hydration after only 2 weeks of continued use.

Here is how astaxanthin stacks up against other well-known antioxidants as a free radical scavenger of singlet oxygen molecules:

  • 54 times stronger than a-lipoic acid*
  • 800 times stronger than CoQ10 enzyme*
  • 6,000 times greater than vitamin C*
  • 550 times more powerful than green tea catechins*

*RELATIVE SINGLET OXYGEN MOLECULAR QUENCHING ACTIVITY

Astaxanthin was even found to be as much as 2.75 stronger than lutein with regard to singlet oxygen quenching.

Check out our available products with astaxanthin below and read their descriptions to find out which products you’d like to add to your line.

Oxygen Renewal:  A triple layered approach to anti-aging.  Each bottle contains a concentrate of actives that address all aspects of cellular health.  Astaxanthin is found in the topmost ‘oil’ layer where it works to reduce inflammation and defend your skin’s DNA in association with Omega-7 and omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin C esters and Vitamin E.  The middle layer has mineral-rich seaweed extracts, polypeptides and hyaluronic acid for super moisturization.  The bottom layer is pure Liquid Oxygen to boost cellular metabolism and collagen synthesis.

Astaxanthin O2 Calming Gel:  This oil-free formula is deep orange reflecting the high levels of astaxanthin.  Ideal for sensitive skin, it supports normalizing conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea, etc.  It is hydrating and non-greasy.  We have conducted an experiment to demonstrate astaxanthin’s anti-inflammatory and cooling properties (combined with liquid oxygen) when applied directly to the surface skin.  As the thermograph below shows, surface temperature is radically lowered within 60 seconds of application.
